There’s a quiet but important difference between escaping and resting.

For a long time, I didn’t realize I was doing the first one while telling myself it was the second.

Both can look the same on the surface. Cut to laying down. Scrolling. Watching something. Stepping away from the world for a moment.

But the feeling underneath is completely different.

🌿 What Escaping Feels Like

Escaping usually comes from a place of overwhelm.

It’s the moment when everything feels like too much, and instead of processing it, we reach for something, anything honestly, to take us somewhere else.

Escaping can look like:

  • endless scrolling

  • binge-watching without really enjoying it

  • avoiding something we know we need to do

  • numbing out instead of slowing down

  • reading to find a new dimension to live in

There’s often a quiet tension underneath it.

Even while you’re “resting,” part of you feels:

  • guilty

  • restless

  • slightly disconnected

  • still tired

It doesn’t actually refill you.

It just pauses the discomfort for a little while.

☁️ What Resting Feels Like

Resting is different.

Resting is intentional.

It has a softness to it.

It might look similar on the outside, also lying down, watching something, stepping away, but internally, it feels like permission instead of avoidance.

Resting can look like:

  • taking a nap without guilt

  • sitting in silence

  • cooking something simple

  • going for a slow walk

  • doing something small that feels grounding

There’s a sense of:

  • calm

  • presence

  • quiet restoration

When you’re done, you don’t feel behind.

You feel ready.

🧠 The Real Difference

The difference isn’t the activity.

It’s the intention.

Escaping says:

“I don’t want to feel this.”

Resting says:

“I need a moment to take care of myself.”

One disconnects you.

The other brings you back.

🌱 Learning the Difference

This is something I’m still learning.

There are days where I catch myself slipping into escape mode. Ill start reaching for distraction instead of support to pass the time til I have the strength to stand up again.

And there are other days where I can feel the shift. I slow down, I make something simple, I take a breath, I let myself just be.

Those moments feel different.

They feel like I’m actually showing up for myself.

✨ A Gentle Check-In

If you’re not sure which one you’re doing, you can ask yourself:

  • Do I feel more grounded or more disconnected afterward?

  • Am I avoiding something, or caring for myself?

  • Do I feel calmer… or just distracted?

There’s no judgment here. It's just awareness. Don't shy away from your honest thoughts. They can help guide you to make the choices you feel more aligned with or quite possibly just help you breathe for moment more gently then you did before.

🌼 Closing Thought

Not everything that looks like rest is actually rest.

And not everything needs to be fixed immediately.

Sometimes, the most powerful thing you can do is choose to rest in a way that actually supports you.

Softly. Intentionally. Without rushing.
